What if I Accidentally Hurt my Loved One?

March 13, 2020

It’s a common fear and one that keeps some from touching their loved ones.

Here’s a direct quote: “I’ve never given touch to elderly family members who were very ill and frail. Why? Fear of hurting them.”

It’s real. When your loved-one is ill and frail, the fear of hurting them is front and center… as it should be. As you consider providing gentle-touch massage for your loved-one, DO NO HARM is paramount.

That’s why I teach simple touch techniques that are Shorter, Slower and Softer while encouraging Full-Hand Contact:

  • Shorter sessions – 20-minute sessions are effective in providing rest, relaxation and comfort.
  • Slower strokes – engages the central nervous system – specifically the parasympathetic nervous system allowing rest and digest.
  • Softer pressure – gentle pressure is a must for those with advanced illness. Heavy massage puts more demand on the body and can make your loved-one feel worse.
  • Full-hand contact – using the entire surface of your hand as you massage provides added comfort.

Don’t let fear keep you from touching your loved-one. It’s a very basic human need. Your loved-one deserves your gentle, loving touch.

A gentle hold of the hand or a simple hand on the shoulder or foot over linens or clothing is very effective.

Give it a try!
