Do you set aside time – on a regular basis – to receive a massage?
It can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being. Studies tell us the benefits of regular massage is an effective treatment for reducing stress, anxiety, muscle pain and tension. Some studies have found massage may also benefit:
-
Digestive disorders
-
Headaches

Insomnia related to stress
-
Sports injuries
-
Post-surgical pain and edema
-
Side-effects from cancer treatment
Beyond the specific benefits, some people enjoy massage because it often produces a feeling of comfort and connection.
Is regular massage for you?
The answer depends on many factors, and differs from person to person. Let’s take a look at things to consider when determining a regular massage schedule for your individual needs.
-
Why are you seeking massage?
-
How did you feel following your last massage?
-
How much time can you devote to regular massage?
-
Does your budget allow for regular massage?
Why are you seeking massage?
General Relaxation and Stress Reduction:
Many receive massage for health maintenance and stress reduction. The purpose is to reduce stress, relieve pain and support the body, including blood circulation and joint flexibility. My recommendation is once a month; however, more often is more beneficial.
If you are in a high-stress job or work in an environment that requires you to be in one position for a prolonged period of time, you may develop tight muscles in your back, arms and shoulders. These may result in reduced movement and significant pain. We know that constant stress increases our risk of heart disease, cancer and many other diseases. To help you cope with high-stress situations, get a massage weekly or bi-weekly.
Chronic Illness:
If you suffer from chronic illness such as diabetes, fibromyalgia, lupus, Parkinson’s or ALS, massage can be a big help. I continue to hear from clients who say their doctor recommended massage for these various conditions. Massage can provide pain relief, stress reduction and provide an overall feeling of well-being. It also provides empowerment that allows you to choose something to enhance your healing process.
Cancer:
Studies continue to prove the health benefits of massage for cancer patients. Massage can be received before, during and after traditional cancer treatment (surgery, chemo, radiation) when provided by a massage therapist trained in oncology massage. Empower yourself and take charge of your healing. Massage can help you through your cancer journey. Weekly, bi-weekly and monthly appointments are recommended based on your particular healing journey.
Pre and Post Surgery/Lymphedema:
Specialized Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapy is available for those with or who are at-risk of developing lymphedema. MLD is also recommended pre and post surgery. Based on your particular needs, MLD can be received 2-3 times per week until swelling and pain subside and then weekly or monthly for maintenance.
How did you feel following your last massage?
Every time you get a massage, you should evaluate and make sure you are getting maximum benefits. If your chronic pain is getting better through massage, you might change your schedule from weekly to every other week for maintenance purposes.
How much time and money can you devote to regular massage?
Your time and finances are important factors to consider when scheduling massage appointments. Make the most out of your resources by going to an excellent therapist. If your first therapist didn’t fulfill your needs, keep looking. Massage Therapy is about finding a “match”. Every therapist does things differently and every person receives massage differently. The perfect match is out there… keep looking until you find it.
Despite its benefits, massage isn’t meant as a replacement for regular medical care. Let your doctor know you’re trying massage and be sure to follow any standard treatment plans you have.
I strive to provide you with exactly what you need and want during each session. You’re feedback before, during and after your massage is priceless. Contact me today to find out if we’re a match. Consultations are always free.
xoxo, Susan
