I used to be afraid of massage. It’s true. I was the one who left the room or changed the subject when someone talked about massage. It made me VERY uncomfortable. The fear of the unknown got me… big time. I was adamant that I would never get a massage.
NEVER would I –
- go into a dark room with a stranger
- get undressed
- get on a table under a sheet
- let someone rub on me
UH…. NO!! NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. I didn’t talk about it. Just… NO!
Since massage is now my livelihood and passion, I think it’s time to spill the beans. What changed my mind?
Peer pressure! Yes, I let peer pressure get me on the massage table.Denis and I were invited on a weekend get-a-way with three other couples from his company. The guys played golf and the ladies hung out on the beach and did some shopping.
It was glorious, until… someone mentioned we should all receive a massage. OMG! What could I do? I wanted to jump and run. But, I went along with the crowd. (Also known as Peer Pressure).
The next thing I know, resort staff is setting up a massage table in our cabana and I am receiving my very first massage.
The setting was perfect. The massage table was set up on the screened-in porch attached to our cabana, the weather was warm, a light rain was falling and the therapist was excellent.
Yes, I was nervous. But it turned out to be the best thing that ever happen to me. I was completely relaxed. My neck felt much better. I took a nap afterward and was sold … hook, line and sinker.
Not only did this experience help me realize the awesomeness of massage, it also helps me when someone new comes to my studio. My experience helps me stay keenly aware of how a newbie might feel.
Peer pressure… I warned my children about it, tried to steer clear of it, but am happy to report I let it get the best of me and for that, I am thankful.
