Chronic Illness and Isolation

January 13, 2021

I saw one of my regular clients in his home last week. He has extreme chemical sensitivities and has dealt with it for many years. It keeps him home most of the time. It has taken away his ability to do things outdoors that he used to enjoy; gardening, hiking, taking care of his own yard, maintenance around the house. He’s unable to go to public places. He’s stuck inside where he can control his environment.

We were discussing the current crisis of the pandemic and how it has compounded his situation. I mentioned that I’m so ready for it to be behind us because I’m beginning to feel isolated.

My comment opened the door. He passionately reminded me how isolated he is — and has been for a VERY long time. He hopes that through this pandemic, others will realize how chronic illness feels every day.

I listened intently and agreed.

Now that I’ve had time to reflect on his statements and genuine feelings, I realize how insensitive I was when mentioning my own feelings of isolation.

It caused me to consider things that are taken away due to the illness.

It created a desire in me to have more compassion.

Some Chronic Illness Creates:

Fear of going anywhere

Fear of being with others

The inability to do the things you want to do; shopping; entertaining; restaurants; church

Lunch with friends

Holiday gatherings

Hugs

It reminded me of the importance of safe, gentle-touch massage. Those confined need touch more than ever.  If you’re in a situation to provide touch for someone, you should consider learning how. Learn not only the touch techniques, but how to go deeper in your relationships. Touch is powerful… sometimes no words needed. Non-medical comfort care is desperately needed.

Are you ready to learn a new skill? You deserve it and so do those in your sphere of influence.
