Do you look for joy while working with your patients? Sometimes it’s hard to find and others… well, it shows up when you least expect it.
Hang in there with me... this will take some explaning!
I live about 30 minutes from Hot Springs, AR. As you would guess, the city is known for its hot springs. Bathhouses were built between the years of 1892 and 1923. Many of them are right next to each other and are affectionately known as Bathhouse Row. Currently there are eight bathhouse buildings. Several are still in operation today and bring many tourists each year.
Each bathhouse does things a little differently; the idea is to soak in the hot water and drink the mineral waters. Many locations offer spa services, including massage. It’s a delightful way to spend an afternoon.
I saw a new hospice patient this week. Referral form includes the following information:

Primary diagnosis: CVA (cerebrovascular accident and stroke)

90 year old female

Past history of broken R arm; wears a brace

Heart disease, chronic fatigue

Pt has R sided weakness due to stroke

Most pain is R shoulder, hip, knee and foot
Peggy is a delightful patient and very happy to see me. She’s talkative and asks many questions. After assessing her, I start the music and get my lotion.
I start on her right side because that’s the area causing most pain. After I worked for a few minutes, she told me she is a former massage therapist and worked in the bath houses for many years. I’m happy we have something in common.
Not long into my gentle-touch massage, she very boldly says,
“You’d get fired the very first day!”
I looked at her puzzled. “At the bath houses, you’d get fired your very first day. Everyone wants deep pressure!”
We both got a good laugh as I explain the reason for my gentle work. She agrees and admits the gentle touch feels very good. She closes her eyes and rests as I work.
Every time I think of Peggy I smile.
It’s all about the little things. Look for them, they’re all around us waiting to be found.
